On the Wall
‘Michael Jackson: On the Wall’ was a landmark exhibition exploring the influence of Michael Jackson on some of the leading names in contemporary art, spanning several generations of artists from across the world. For this exhibition I redesigned the National Portrait Gallery’s Main Hall and Information Desk to create a unique space that served as an engaging entrance to the exhibition but also upgraded existing information and signage systems. This included creating a reflective acrylic title graphic and installing lightboxes for ticketing information. In the ‘Andy Warhol’ room I produced designs for a full graphic wallpaper to cover the room featuring photographs of Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol and the Jackson Five. I also focused on designing a theatrical archway between exhibition spaces based on Mark Ryden’s artwork for Michael Jackson’s fourth solo album, ‘Dangerous’. In addition to the archway serving as a theatrical set, it also provided numerous opportunities for social media promotion and marketing. The archway was a curved structure with standoff cut out graphics, free standing graphics and a recessed retractable electric blind. This primarily allowed visitors to flow through into the next section of the exhibition while also provided a solution for visitors with access requirements.
