Martin Parr
'Only Human: Martin Parr' was an exhibition that brought together works by one of Britain’s best-known and most widely celebrated photographers, Martin Parr. The exhibition included portraits of people from around the world, with a special focus on Parr’s wry observations of Britishness, explored through a series of projects that investigated British identity today. Collaborating with Martin Parr, his studio and internal and external curators I designed the exhibition focusing on paint colours, large format graphics, vinyl graphics, flooring, framing and setting out designs for the hang. These individual elements came together to create a bold, changing space that responded to each theme in a playful way. For this exhibition I also designed a unique pop-up café in the heart of the space that showcased some of Parr’s earlier works and served as a breakout space between themes. It was a fully functioning café, serving tea, coffee, a range of cakes and beer. This provided visitors a chance to discuss the exhibition’s themes and look at a range of catalogues available for sale. The design was based on a quintessential British caff with PVC seats, Formica tables, lino flooring, blackboards, a cathode ray television and a Union Jack. During the design of the exhibition I also focused extensively on the marketing campaign, creating the look and feel, designing the exhibition lock-up, invitations, posters, banners and press ads to promote the exhibition.
